Cover’d – Digital Cover Pass App For Nightlife

A mobile app that digitised cover pass issuance for nightclubs and bars, replacing cash, stamps and paper at the door with a pass on the guest’s phone and a quick scan at entry.

Overview

Cover’d is a mobile app that digitised how nightclubs and bars issue cover passes. Instead of paying at the door and receiving a stamp, wristband or paper slip, guests get their cover pass on their phone and show it at entry. Sodio built the platform — the guest app, the venue side and the system connecting them.

The door is the busiest and most pressured point of any night out. Cash handling, manual checks and paper slips slow the queue and are easy to get wrong or abuse. Moving the cover pass onto the phone turns entry into a quick scan, and gives venues an accurate record of every pass issued and used.

For guests, the pass is ready before they arrive. For venues, it means less cash at the door, less room for disputes, and a clear view of how many guests are expected and how many have come through.

/// The Brief

Nightclubs and bars collected cover charges at the door the way they always had: cash or card, a stamp or wristband, and a member of staff keeping count. It worked, but it slowed entry at the busiest time of night, left cash to manage and reconcile, and made it hard for a venue to know accurately how many guests had paid.

The brief was to move the cover pass onto the phone — issued digitally, shown at the door and verified in seconds — with a clean record for the venue of every pass issued and every pass used.

/// Our Approach

We designed around the door, because that is where the product succeeds or fails. Verification had to take seconds and work in low light and loud surroundings, without staff typing anything. The pass is shown on the guest’s phone and scanned at entry, and the result is unmistakable on the staff device.

Every pass is unique and valid once. After it is scanned at the door it cannot be reused or handed to someone else, which closes the loopholes that copied stamps and passed-back wristbands leave open.

Clubs are loud, dark and often have poor signal, so the door experience was designed for exactly those conditions rather than for a quiet office. For the venue team, every pass issued and scanned is recorded, giving an accurate count of guests and cover revenue for the night.

/// The Result

The result is Cover’d: a mobile app that took the cover pass for nightclubs and bars from cash and paper to the phone.

Guests arrive with their pass ready and get through the door with a scan. Venues handle less cash at the door, close the loopholes of stamps and wristbands, and see an accurate count of every guest who paid.

It is a small moment in a night out, and that is the point. When the door works, nobody notices it — everyone just gets inside faster.
