Publishing and CMS Development
Editorial content management, publishing platforms, paywalls and reader apps, built around how a newsroom actually works rather than how a generic CMS assumes it does.
TRUSTED BY TEAMS
Sodio builds publishing software: custom and headless CMS, editorial workflow and newsroom tooling, digital publishing platforms, paywall and subscription systems, news apps and digital editions, plus publishing AI for paywall propensity, churn, tagging and moderation
Most publishing software problems are workflow problems wearing a technology label — commissioning, embargoes, legal review, syndication rights and print alignment are where a generic CMS stops fitting, not the editor itself.
/// WHAT MAKES PUBLISHING SOFTWARE DIFFERENT
Most Publishers Should Not Build a CMS
The Established Platforms
WordPress, Ghost and the established publishing platforms handle standard editorial work well, and for most titles that is the right answer. We will say so during discovery rather than quote for a build nobody needs.
Where Custom Work Fits
Multi-title operations sharing content across mastheads with different rights. Embargoes and legal review as workflow states rather than conventions. Syndication rules that decide what a partner can republish, where and for how long. Print and digital schedules that have to align without either becoming the other's afterthought.
The Archive
The archive is the second thing generic platforms handle badly, and it is usually the most valuable asset a publication owns. Decades of content with inconsistent tagging, no reliable search and rights nobody has documented. Making it findable and licensable is often worth more than any front-end change.
The Economics Have Shifted
Advertising alone stopped funding most publications, which makes subscription conversion and retention the business. That changes what the software is for — it is a conversion product now, not a publishing tool, and the paywall decision matters more than the editor does.
What We Do Not Build
One thing we do not build: generated articles published without editorial review. It damages the only thing a publication actually sells.

///AI FOR PUBLISHING
AI for Publishing
Publishing AI is worth building where it moves subscription revenue or unlocks the archive. It is not worth building to write articles, which damages the only asset a publication has.
Paywall Propensity Modelling
Which readers will subscribe and when to show the wall, rather than the same meter for everyone.
Subscriber Churn Prediction
Which subscribers are about to lapse, with the content or offer most likely to keep them.
Content Recommendation
Next-article relevance that raises pages per session without collapsing into the same five stories.
Automated Tagging & Archive Search
Decades of archive turned into something searchable, reusable and licensable.
AI Summarisation & Headline Testing
Summaries, standfirsts and headline variants with performance prediction, drafted for an editor to approve.
Comment Moderation
Moderation at volume with human review queues, appeals and the context handling automated systems get wrong.
AI Translation & Syndication
Content reuse across editions, territories and partners, with editorial review before anything publishes.

/// HOW WE WORK
How We Work on Publishing Projects
Workflow and archive audit
We follow a story from commission to publication, including the approvals and exceptions nobody documents. Then we assess the archive — volume, tagging quality, URL structure and inbound links.
Free solution architecture
Content model, workflow design, paywall approach, archive migration and URL mapping plan, and a costed delivery plan. Yours to keep whether or not you build with us — including if the recommendation is to buy a platform.
MVP in 30 days
One publication path end to end — commission, draft, review, publish, meter — with real content rather than sample articles.
Production build in 90 days
Full build with archive migration, redirects verified, subscriptions and analytics. Multi-title rollout is phased masthead by masthead.

/// FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Usually you should not, and we will say so. WordPress, Ghost and the established publishing platforms cover standard editorial workflow well. Custom work earns its place when your workflow does not fit the tool — multi-title operations with shared content, embargo and legal review steps, syndication rules, print and digital alignment, or rights and licensing built into the content model. If none of those apply, buy the platform.
It depends on whether your traffic or your loyalty is the asset. Metered suits high-volume general news where casual readers convert slowly. Freemium suits publications with a clear premium tier. Hard paywalls suit specialist and trade titles where the audience has no substitute. The more useful question is not which model but when the wall appears, which is where propensity modelling changes the numbers more than the model choice does.
Yes, and it is the part that most often goes wrong. Publishing archives accumulate decades of URLs, many with inbound links and search authority, and a migration without a complete redirect map loses that permanently. We build the URL map before anything moves. We have done this on our own site after a migration that shipped without redirects, and the recovery cost more than the map would have.
Good enough to triage, not good enough to decide alone. Models reliably catch obvious abuse and reliably struggle with context, satire, quoting and coded language — all of which are common under news articles. The workable pattern is automated action on high confidence, a human queue for anything ambiguous, and an appeal path. Fully automated moderation on news comments produces complaints you will have to answer publicly.
Not in anything we build. AI is useful for summaries, headline variants, tagging, translation drafts and archive search — tasks where an editor reviews the output before it publishes. Generated articles published without editorial review damage the thing a publication sells, which is trust, and search engines have become markedly less tolerant of scaled content. We build AI into the workflow, not in place of it.
For a defined scope we target a working MVP in 30 days and a core production build in 90. Publishing extends when archive migration, print system integration or a multi-title rollout are involved. Archive migration in particular is usually underestimated — it is a data and URL problem more than a content one.
