This is the problem that kills most new social products and it is the one we have built for directly. A new user has no connections and no history, so a feed driven by behaviour alone is empty and a network driven by connections alone has nothing to show. What works is stated interests, content similarity and algorithmic seeding until real signal accumulates. We built exactly this for Horizon, an interest-graph platform whose entire premise was connecting people outside their existing network — removing the strongest signal most recommendation systems rely on.

More than most founders budget, and it never stops growing. Automated moderation handles the obvious at volume but reliably struggles with context, satire, quoting and coded language, so a human review queue is a permanent operating cost rather than a launch phase. Plan for the queue, the appeals process and the audit trail from the start. Platforms that add moderation after a problem spend considerably more than those that design for it.

It depends on what you are promising users and which jurisdictions you operate in. End-to-end encryption is achievable and increasingly expected for private messaging, but it materially constrains moderation, search, multi-device sync and content recovery. Those are product decisions with legal consequences, not technical preferences. We map the trade-off explicitly before building rather than discovering it after launch.

With layered controls rather than one feature. Photo and identity verification at signup, behavioural signals that flag escalation patterns, in-app reporting that leads somewhere, handling that does not expose a user's home, and a moderation queue with genuine escalation paths. Safety in dating is a legal and reputational exposure as much as a product one, and it is not something to retrofit.

Up to a point, and the point arrives faster than expected. Feed generation, notification fan-out and media processing are the three things that break first, usually together, during a spike. Building them on managed services with clear scaling paths buys you a long runway. What does not work is a feed built as a database query — that fails at exactly the moment growth finally arrives.

For a defined scope we target a working MVP in 30 days and a core production build in 90. Social extends when moderation tooling, verification, encryption or app store review for user-generated content are involved. Store review is notably stricter for UGC apps, and we plan around it rather than discovering it at submission.
